Hari Singh was our driver, guide and apple supplier. A very soft-spoken man, gentle, diplomatic (he rescued us from many a drunk villager who wanted a ride with us) and was quite amused by us, I think. His friend referred him to us: the selling points being that he does not drink or smoke. For someone who left his family for days on end in the summer, it was quite impressive. I guess faith and religion kept him going.
The tourism business comes as a mixed blessing. The areas around Manali and beyond are gaining in popularity and guides like Hari Singh are kept busy throughout the season. The business has been profitable enough for these guides/drivers that many of them own apple orchards that their families help take care of. All their income is derived from the profits from the apple orchards and tourism. This money has to sustain them through the harsh winter months, when the heavy snowfall pretty much confines them to their homes.
