Great Smoky Mountains National Park : Travelled to the Smokies over the Memorial day weekend. Stayed in Gatlinburg. Hiked a lot. Saw the sunrise at Clingman's Dome (had to wake up at 4:30 a.m. to drive up to the top!) and did the 8 mile (roundtrip i.e.) hike to Ramsey Cascades. It was exhausting but well worth it :-).

Bhuj : I wanted to take my mother on a holiday - (you know, mother-daughter bonding and all that good stuff) and decided to go off the beaten track - this time to Bhuj, Gujarat. A friend told me about this endogenous tourism project outside Bhuj (www.hodka.in) and it looked and sounded great.

It was a great choice. We spent three days there and lived in little tents with amenities similar to the local villagers.

We visited several villages specializing in arts and crafts that Bhuj is so famous for and travelled through the desert and up to the Rann of Kutch (or at least as far as the permissible military outposts) and met some wonderful and fascinating people.

Life for these simple folks is harsh, and lately the villagers have resorted to burning brush to generate coal - apparently it is a very lucrative occupation (very being a relative term, I suppose). The health and environmental effects of this endeavour can only be imagined. On a social note, the craftmaking skills are slowly dying as both men and women are involved in coal-making. Hopefully the Gujarat government will act on this soon.

Most of the villagers is this district are predominantly muslims, with a smattering of hindus. To date, they have lived in perfect harmony - unperturbed by the communal riots of the past three decades, just 300 kms away.

Italy: Cinque Terre : A taste of Liguria.

Five villages embracing the coastline, each unique in its own way. Great beaches, hiking trails linking the villages, spectacular sunsets, stunning vistas, excellent local wine and grappa, foccacia al formaggio, the sea...

We stayed in Moneglia (10 mins. north of the first (last?) Cinque Terre village. A quaint little town and thankfully not too crowded. We walked along the trail from Riomaggiore to Corniglia and then again from Vernazza to Monterosso al Mare. Also spent a day in Portovenere.

India : Photos from Himachal Pradesh, India. We spent 6 days there dividing our time between Kullu, Manali and the region of Lahaul in the Trans Himalayan region beyond Rohtang Pass. The region is beautiful, stark, and remote. The people esp. in the villages are warm, friendly, very poor and touch your soul. I hope to return someday.
